R.I.P. DVD
The current consensus in the TV and video industry is that Blu-Ray will be the last physical format available to consumers, the last time you’ll hold a movie in your hands. Is this the case? Probably, but with qualifications. The issue isn’t with Blu-Ray or DVD or any other format but with the way we access video now and in the future. Let me explain.
Super Speed Global Delivery
Over a weekend in the middle of September this year we set up a virtual newsroom for the start of the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race in the Yorkshire port of Hull. This involved gathering footage from two roving crews (and additional material from other crews at the event), editing the footage into short modules and uploading to a dedicated media resource website which we had set up in advance. The clips were then downloaded by broadcasters around the world for use in their news bulletins.
Hi-Def Lowdown
As you probably already know, by the end of 2012 every TV in the UK will be have to be “digital ready” otherwise its bye-bye to Eastenders, Big Brother, Loose Women, Gok’s Fashion Fix, Goldenballs and it’ll be the last you’ll ever see of Last of the Summer Wine. For some of us this is a cause for celebration but for the vast majority it means, at best, a new digi-box to ensure you can keep on watching these TV “treasures” or, at worst, a brand new TV – a big expense in testing times.
In Pod We Trust
So you may be sat there wondering what a podcast is. It’s the buzz word on everyone’s lips at the moment thanks to people such as Ricky Gervais and his phenomenally successful series of podcasts which have been downloaded more than 2 million times since their launch.
